It consists of multiple-choice questions covering topics from the National Electrical Code, some electrical theory, and various calculations. Passing the exam grants a journeyman license, which is a major career milestone allowing for higher-paying jobs and increased responsibility.
Exam format
Question type: Primarily multiple-choice and some caculation questions.
Structure: Single test
Duration: 4 hours, 100 questions.
Book access: Open book with highlights, tabs, and written notes allowed with pen or pencil with highlights.
Scoring: A minimum score of 75% required to pass.
Content covered
National Electrical Code (NEC): A significant portion of the exam is "look up" style questions.
Electrical Theory and Calculations: About a quater of the exam content.
Wiring Methods and Materials: Knowledge of different types of wiring, raceways, boxes, and fittings.
Equipment and Devices: Understanding the function and application of various electrical equipment.
Special Conditions: Knowledge related to special occupancies and hazardous locations.
Prerequisites to take the exam
Experience: 4 to 6 years of on-the-job electrical experience under a licensed contractor.
Training: Completion of a registered apprenticeship program or a minimum number of classroom hours in electrical theory and code.
Application: You must submit an application with documentation of your work and training. All information to be verifiable by the State Journeyman Board.
